Weather Observer – Seasonal



The Weather Observer will observe and record weather conditions used in forecasting and relay to aircraft and other locations, as well as assist the forecast team in weather product preparation and dissemination, including providing briefings. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Take, record, and disseminate surface weather observations and complete necessary forms in accordance with Federal, Department of Defense (DOD), and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) guidelines
  • Record, transmit, and archive METAR/SPECI and synoptic observations in accordance with established procedures and in support of the Global Climate Observing System
  • Prepare balloon, radiosonde, and ground-tracking equipment for use in the upper-air program
  • Perform the launch and tracking of the rawinsonde package
  • Evaluate and transmit atmospheric pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and wind direction and speed encoded from the radiosonde flight data

Required Skills, Education, Certifications and Experience


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of experience as a qualified weather observer for surface observations at an aviation weather facility
  • Must be able to perform job duties in extreme, cold, and dark work environments
  • Must pass medical and dental examination prior to deployment; expenses are reimbursable
  • A valid passport is required and is reimbursable



  • Graduate of a DOD meteorology technician course or equivalent civilian course of study leading to a weather observing/forecasting certification or;
  • BS degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or other natural sciences, which includes or is supplemented by at-least 24 semester hours of credit in meteorology or atmospheric science that meets WMO-258 BIP-M qualifications
  • Four (4) years of experience in weather forecasting and operational meteorology, which includes at least one (1) year of experience in airport/airfield weather forecasting in support of an operational weather office


Due to COVID-19, quarantine requirements are possible based on NSF direction and travel restrictions.
Physical requirements for this position

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is  required to work remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods; Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Must be able to lift 20 lbs or greater.


Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions requiring exposure to extreme cold climate conditions.
